My interest in metaphysics stemmed from reading Dr. Ernest Holmes' Science of Mind & Philosophy textbook. I was drawn to the notion that abstract spiritual concepts could have practical applications in my life.

As I delved deeper, I discovered there are underlying principles behind the practices, but they were obtuse at first. These dealt with concepts not directly observable or measurable. Unlike my training in the physical sciences, where you would study tangible phenomena, metaphysics explored ideas such as existence, reality, or the causality created by the mind.

These notions. inherently abstract, required me to think in very different ways. Like the concept of a collective human consciousness, or the interplay between mind and this collective or between mind and body, because there are no physical phenomena to link causation to.

Yet, at its core, the teaching held a simple method for changing my life. Dr. Holmes called it Spiritual Mind Treatment. It took me a while to fully grasp the intricate ideas Holmes was discussing, despite their apparent simplicity.

For example, Holmes begins the Treatment with the principle of Oneness to establish that all life, the entire universe, and all existence are interconnected parts of a single, infinite reality called consciousness. This understanding is crucial because it lays the groundwork for seeing ourselves as integral parts of the larger whole, rather than separate or isolated entities.

By recognizing this unity, individuals can tap into the universal creative power that Holmes believes is accessible to everyone. He believed that the perception of separation is an illusion and the act of taking this first step in the process creates a causal link to the subsequent steps that follow.

So, many of the challenges and sufferings people experience arise from the belief in separation—from each other, from nature, and from the Divine. So, we might think starting Treatment by moving into the feeling of connection may seem the logical way to counter this illusion and foster a sense of connection and harmony with the universe. But that is not fully true. True transformation happens when we enter a state of deep silence. Not just the absence of noise, but absence of thought, memories, associations, perceptions - the dissolution of our perceived sense of self (ego). As we let go and become one, without a two, ultimate healing occurs for us and those around us because the illusion transforms (illusion here does not mean it doesn’t exist but doesn’t exist as we perceive it).

In the eyes of Holmes, the concept of separation was nothing more than a trick of the mind. It was an illusory barrier, a fabricated boundary that divided the world into false dichotomies. To him, everything was connected, entwined like threads in a tapestry, each strand affecting the other in ways unseen and unknown. The very idea of being apart from something or someone was absurd to him, for he saw the interconnectedness of all things.

Although continuing the other steps of Spiritual Mind Treatment was unnecessary if step one was fully realized. But one of the most powerful aspects of Holmes' Spiritual Mind Treatment lay in his ability to teach this abstract concept with such clarity and conviction. In the process, the second step was always simple yet profound: to proclaim oneself as fully connected with the Divine consciousness. With a deep breath and a centered mind, he would declare the desired result to be true with unwavering faith.

Tragically, countless misguided educators of this profound technique fail to grasp its fundamental principle - one must personally experience the initial step to effectively impart this powerful method to others.
